At the site of those very same canning jars, you remember and instantly crave for the delicate flavours that can only come from the timeless recipes of preserves passed down through the generations: Aunt Lena Preserves
A pantry, a larder, a closet of space,
a cupboard for treasures: my most favourite place.
Enormous old thing, that was all made of wood,
I remember it well, by the stairs where it stood.
A storeroom of sorts, that was filled to the brim,
quite handsome in pine, with a nice wooden trim.
It housed some preserves, that were all sealed in jars,
kettles and spices and brother’s tin cars.
There were charming containers; like jugs and pound bags,
barrels of pickles and boxes of rags,
cartons of books, that I didn’t read,
a basket of apples and sacks filled with seed.
My pine pantry pleasures were such a delight,
that sometimes I stayed there, long into the night,
to sort through the shelves, wind up the rope,
or take down the boxes of fresh smelling soap,
hang up dried flowers or dig through the tools
for here in this cupboard, there weren’t any rules.
Only the dog and two cats sat behind,
quite curious to see all the things I would find.
One day as I searched, I suddenly knew,
my future was clear and the child in me grew.
The paint set and brushes, just sitting around,
channelled my thoughts and the images found.
The pantry of my mind, with secrets untold,
on canvas as pictures, began to unfold.
My inner expressions were clearly set free,
as my own special place, helped me be me!
